A website can look current while its administration, plug-ins, or recovery arrangements have been neglected. Keep a service record that covers the domain, DNS, hosting, content platform, certificates, forms, integrations, and the people responsible for each.

Separate ownership from routine editing

The organization should retain appropriate control of its registration and service accounts. Give editors the access their work needs, protect administrator identities, and remove obsolete agency or contractor access. The domain ownership article explains why renewal and recovery contacts matter even when a provider handles day-to-day changes.

Review the information the site collects and where it sends it. An inquiry form can create copies in mailboxes, plug-ins, analytics systems, and external services. Apply the data-handling decision to the whole path.

Maintain and verify the application

Keep supported components updated under an agreed change process. Test important forms, sign-in, navigation, and accessibility after material changes. OWASP’s Top 10 project provides a reference for significant web-application risks; it is not a substitute for reviewing the actual application and its configuration.

Back up the information and configuration needed to recover the site, and establish who can restore it if the usual developer is unavailable. Test the relevant recovery procedure and keep vendor escalation details outside a single person’s inbox.

Define the handoffs among the website provider, internal content owners, and infrastructure administrators. Include accessibility and the incident procedure in that arrangement. A form that stops delivering messages or exposes information can affect the organization even when the home page continues to load normally.
